When reviewing their web analytics, our clients often ask us how they can block visits from employees so that they can see “real” website visitors. Unfortunately, this is an age-old problem that is not easily solved.  There are a couple of ways to prevent tracking your own visits to your site, or those of your employees. However, none are simple and none are permanent.  Block Web Analytics by IP Address Every computer or mobile device that is connected to the Internet is assigned an “IP address” (IP stands for Internet Protocol). Most web analytics programs allow you to filter out visits to your site from specific IP addresses. This is great in theory, but it only works if you have what is called a “static IP” – meaning your IP address is always the same. Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will assign a “dynamic IP”, meaning they will change your IP address every few weeks. Web Analytics - What to Look For When selecting and implementing a web analytics program, it’s important to know what information you need access to. There are many programs available, but they are not all created equally. In the case of web analytics, a higher price tag does not necessarily indicate a better system. You must decide what information is relevant to your business and select a web analytics program that can provide that data. It’s fine if your analytics provide much more data than you need, but if you will never actually use it, it’s certainly not worth paying more for. What to look for in a web analytics program: How many visitors did the website receive in the last month? What pages were viewed and how many visitors bounced out of those pages? Web Analytics Tip: Why the Numbers Don't Matter No two web analytics programs will provide identical website traffic data. Given the different variables used by different software, you will likely see a discrepancy in your statistics, sometimes as high as 20%. Website traffic data is meant to be used as a guide, so don’t worry if one web analytics program says your website had 679 visitors and another says you had only 632. Most often, the actual numbers don't matter. Rather than focusing on the absolute numbers, think in terms of trends. When considering Web Analytics, ask yourself… Do a large percentage of website visitors leave your home page without ever clicking through to any other web pages?
